Working to expand mental health programs in BIPOC communities

NAMI Eastside's Multicultural Steering Committee

The Multicultural Steering Committee was launched in February of 2021 to gather community partners to examine the cultural and language barriers that interfere with community access to mental health support and services. NAMI Eastside is excited to partner with the India Association of Western Washington (IAWW), the Muslim Community Resource Center (MCRC), Centro Cultural Mexicano, Entre Hermanos, and other community organizations to develop collective strategies to advocate for improved mental health support and ensure that every community gets the services that are needed. We all agreed that the COVID pandemic has adversely impacted our youth, and we are working to establish some family mental health programs that will provide relief and support to youth and their families in BIPOC communities.

The Multicultural Steering Committee will meet on the second Wednesday of each month on Zoom.  Priya Nagar, Board member of NAMI Eastside, chairs this Committee. You can reach her at  Priya@nami-eastside.org

"I have come to see my two children who deal with mental illness as my heroes. They have worked hard to overcome the challenges that come with their mental health condition, to better themselves and to help others."
